Traffic Calming:
  • Windsor at Dickens Elementary school: traffic calming project is about 48th in the list of projects
  • therefore it probably won't get done til late next year
  • to try to get this done sooner, we'll push for the city to integrate Windsor as a bikeway as soon as possible
Kingscrest: (i.e. old Safeway)
  • Vancouver Chinese Baptist Church wants to build a new church on the southwest part of the site
  • About 800 people from all over the lower mainland would go there on Sunday's and Wednesday's
  • a sub-group met with them, and encouraged the architect and the church committee to develop housing, senior care facilities, day care facilities, etc. in addition to the church
  • church and architect will consider this
  • the city is planning to undertake neighbourhood centre planning for the area early next year
  • in the meantime, Michael is drafting an interim policy so that non pedestrian friendly uses on street frontages in the neighbourhood centre are not viewed positively by the City
  • Anne would like to ask the city council to do this now
Traffic Signals:
  • we can give the city a list of pedestrian lights for dangerous intersections for consideration ($ for additional signals has been allocated based on the Vision)
  • the city won't install these additional signals until an arterials engineer is hired
AGM:
  • Michael brought a sample brochure that would be distributed to households
  • advertising and translation needs to be addressed
  • Anne to follow up with Michael/Susan
Community Developer:
  • need to hire this person to do:
    - liaise between community groups
    - reach out to people
    - inform people
    - take on projects important to this community such as:
        - reducing car use to schools
        - traffic calming
    reach out to ethic community
  • where would this person work out of? - Terry offered KCC
  • full time position hired through the city is one option
Website:
  • the information that is on the KCC Community Page is useful so the Committee doesn't see the usefulness of developing their own page
  • the Committee minutes and meeting agendas should be placed on the KCC Community Page
Billboards:
  • how do we get rid of them
  • Michael passed out an article from Dunbar residents association
  • Anne to write a letter to Pat Johnston at C of V
Traffic Calming at Selkirk:
  • there is a lot of excitement at the school about reclaiming the streets
  • there are plans to add benches along 22nd along the school, an archway welcoming people to the school (visible from Commercial approaching 22nd), students' artwork on the sidewalks
Welwyn RowHouse:
  • at the city yard between 22nd and 20th
  • in the Vision, there was a proposal to build modern high-density housing
  • this project seems dead, let's try to get it restarted
  • Michael to report back
Skytrain:
  • we are opposed to a choice that was made in the latest plans for the station in the cut
  • it includes a large platform of concrete just east of the station to house some piece of machinery
  • the architects had other options, but this is what the province chose
  • Barb to report back
Concrete medians:
  • on Victoria Dr at the new London Drugs, and on Victoria Dr at the
Canada Trust (on Kingsway), there is a lot of traffic crossing the solid yellow lines doing left turns
  • the city is considering placing concrete medians to prevent this
  • the Committee supports this, but would like the City to investigate more attractive materials and / or designs
  • Michael to follow-up
Next meeting: Thursday, March 30
AGM: April 27
Regular meetings will be the first Thursday of each month beginning in May.
