Thursday, March 24, 2011
Killarney Community Centre, Room 202, 7:00 p.m.
Meeting Notes
Present: George, Pat, Philip, Daniel, Lorna, Nick.
1. Additions: Alert/Warning: One of our members told of a recent encounter with thieves/pickpockets at Champlain Mall. A man and woman approached our member in the parking lot and asked for directions. The thieves spread a map out the trunk of the car and crowded around. The male thief then jostled our member. Some time later our member realized that credit and debit cards and drivers’ licence were missing. The thieves used one card to take money from a line-of-credit account. A few days later our member saw the same couple at the Safeway store at Tyne and Kingsway. While our member was calling the police from the Safeway store the thieves fled. The gang may number three. Description: The male is tall, slim, late 30s to early 40s, and was wearing black quality casual clothing. The woman was blond. Both spoke with an eastern European accent.
2. Parks. Work continues at Fraserview. No information about 2012-2014 Capital Plan.
3. SVSACS www.svsacs.com Lorna reported on the continuing effort to secure funding for a Seniors Centre at Killarney CC. Lorna is contacting all MLAs to keep them informed of our quest for funding. SVSACS delegations made presentations to: MLAs Adrian Dix, Mable Elmore, and Kash Heed as well as Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh and Don Davies, MPs and to Wai Young of the Conservative Party of Canada. The election of Premier Christy Clark has resulted in Cabinet Shuffle and the anticipated meeting with Mr. Guy Cookson, A/Executive Director of Infrastructure has not materialized. New contacts must and will be sought. The change of Government leadership reinforces the need to keep government aware of need for Seniors Centre.
Tim Williamson and Lorna met with Ms. Bev Pitman of United Way seeking funds to build a model or an artists rendering of the Seniors Centre. The Park Board has made floor plan drawings but no concept sketches. They also discussed support for our Bus Buddy program and Community Shuttles.
SVSACS has taken a membership in the Cross Cultural Organization. All SVSACS members are invited to participate in the organization. Meetings are held on second Monday monthly at 10:00 a.m. at SouthVan Neighbourhood House.

The committee needs more bulldog clips to hold our display panels in place at events. Nick researched this and found a tub of 60 15mm clips for under $6.00 HST in. George to investigate.

9 Regional Growth Strategy – replaces the Liveable Region Strategic Plan. Both Coquitlam and Port Moody rejected this plan and it cannot proceed further until all issues are resolved. Coquitlam rejected the Strategy as being too vague and too inconsistent.
