An Award of Recognition for restoring the two primary facades of the BC Electric Showroom, for retaining and restoring the additional façade of the Hunter Brothers Block, and protecting the St. Regis Hotel and Gotham Steakhouse. Awards were presented to Wall Financial Corporation, Macdonald Development Corporation, Stantec Architecture Ltd. and McGinn Engineering & Preservation Ltd.
Arts and Crafts Building, 576 Seymour Street

An Award of Recognition for restoring the storefront and the mezzanine, re-opening it to the street and adapting new retail and office uses. Awards were presented to owner Terry Pejan, David Hepworth of SITU Design, Hi-Fi Centre and VPAC Construction.
Lumbermens Building, 509 Richards Street

An Award of Recognition for the structural upgrades and interior revitalization. Awards were presented to The Salient Group, Gair Williamson Architects and Commonwealth Historic Resource Management.
Paris Block, 53 West Hastings Street

An Award of Recognition for the rescue, rehabilitation and adaptive re-use and for the social and economic benefits to the neighbourhood. Awards were presented to The Salient Group, Gair Williamson Architects, Ankeman Marchand Architects and Donald Luxton & Associates.
Abrams Block, 210 Carrall Street

An Award of Recognition for the rehabilitation and structural repair and adaptive re-use, with contemporary elements contributing to the historic scale and heritage values of Gastown. Awards were presented to Reliance Holdings Ltd., Merrick Architecture, and John Bryson and Partners.
Chinese Freemasons Building, 5 West Pender Street

An Award of Recognition for the rehabilitation of the exterior, its contribution to the Carrall Street Greenway and incorporating seniors housing which will bring diversity and vitality to the area. Awards were presented to owner Pip Peri Pembo Management Ltd., Joe Y. Wai Architect, Commonwealth Historic Resource Management and Makam Construction Ltd.
Rolzing Residence, 1927 Whyte Avenue

An Award of Recognition for the rehabilitation of the exterior and its contribution to the streetscape character. Awards were presented to owners Serge and Tania Rolzing, Loy Leyland Architect and Formosa Engineering Ltd.
Gow Block, 3589 Commercial Street

An Award of Recognition for the restoration of the storefronts, re-activating its historic use as a corner store and contributing to the area’s historic value and cultural heritage. Awards were presented to owners Jerry Prussin and Norah Johnson, Steve Prokopenko of Blue West Contractors Ltd. and Chris Jordan-Knox of Turnstone Home Repairs.
South Granville Business Improvement Association

An Award of Recognition for the celebration and public awareness generated by its festivities and public awareness efforts: installing heritage plaques, compiling a photo archive, holding a centennial event, and dedicating a time capsule. Awards were presented to the South Granville BIA and Executive Director Sharon Townsend.

Coastal Church, 1160 West Georgia Street

An Award of Merit for the careful restoration of the exterior, including the façade, contemporary buttresses and the interior restoration that includes state of the art technical components. Awards were presented to Coastal Church, Busby Perkins+Will Architects and Robert Lemon Architect.
Bowman Block, 528 Beatty Street

An Award of Merit for the sensitive rehabilitation of the exterior elements and the addition of a compatible contemporary loft addition contributing to the vitality of the Victory Square area. Awards were presented to The Salient Group, Gair Williamson Architects, Ankeman Marchand Architects and Donald Luxton & Associates.
1356 West 13th Avenue

An Award of Merit for conserving the exterior elements including the front porch, the single main entry, gables and stonework. Awards were presented to owner Menkis Enterprises Ltd., Urban Design Group Architects Ltd. and Robert Lemon Architect.
Gadd House, 6583 Marguerite Street

An Award of Merit for the restoration of the exterior, the landscaping, and a number of interior elements, including colours, materials and design appropriate to the house style. Awards were presented to owner, Tim Kerr, Keith Jakobsen Associates, Donna Chomichuk Landscape Architecture and Julie Curtis Interior Design.
Riddick Lane House and Riddick House, 877 & 879 East Georgia Street

An Award of Merit for the exceptional rehabilitation of the exterior of these two buildings and the owners’ attention to detail. Awards were presented to owners John Thomas and Daryl Gouthro.
Johnston-McIntosh House, 1943 East 4th Avenue

An Award of Merit for the rehabilitation of both the exterior porch, cladding, windows and other details, and the interior, and its contribution to the neighbourhood character. Awards were presented to owner Jim Compston, RHP Contracting and painter Todd Eckert.
Vancouver – Stories of a City

An Award of Merit for this detailed, informative and entertaining book. An award was given to writer Lisa Smedman.
Vancouver Heritage Foundation - “Old School – Courses for Building Conservation”

An Award of Merit for the creation of the comprehensive certificate course that raises awareness of heritage conservation values, and educates the public on heritage practices and sustainability. Awards were presented to the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and curriculum consultant Judy Oberlander.

An Award of Honour for the careful restoration of the exterior stonework and other details, and the exemplary re-creation of the arch stone entry, seismic and systems upgrading, sustainable interiors and reinstated areaways. Awards were presented to The Salient Group, Acton Ostry Architects and Donald Luxton & Associates.
Pennsylvania Hotel, 412 Carrall Street

An Award of Honour for the careful restoration of the exterior stonework and exterior elements such as the turret, the re-creation of the historic sign, and for supportive housing, contributing to the revitalization of the Hastings strip. Awards were presented to the Portland Hotel Society, Merrick Architecture, Donald Luxton & Associates and Darwin Construction.
Greencroft, 3838 Cypress Street

An Award of Honour for the careful rehabilitation of the exterior details, the re-creation of interior detailing, and the larger incorporation of the gardens and infill houses, conserving a unique English Arts and Crafts estate in Shaughnessy. Awards were presented to owners Kirsten Strand and Gregg Moe, and contractor Colin Turner.

An Award of Honour for arts consultant, architectural historian and heritage advocate Cheryl Cooper, and her dedicated, principled and successful campaign to have Arthur Erickson’s Evergreen Building saved in its original form, a watershed event in the campaign to have Vancouver’s renowned Modern heritage conserved.
Fred Herzog: Vancouver Photographs

An Award of Honour for this book, together with the acclaimed 2007 Vancouver Art Gallery exhibition, bringing to public awareness the critical representation of Vancouver through the remarkable colour photographs of Fred Herzog over five decades, contributing to the cultural heritage and living memory of the city. Awards were presented to the Vancouver Art Gallery, Fred Herzog, curator and author Grant Arnold and author Michael Turner.
City Reflections: 1907 – Vancouver – 2007

An Award of Honour for the enterprising DVD and Resource Guide City Reflections: 1907-Vancouver-2007, adopted for wide use by the Vancouver School Board, in libraries and workshops, and available to the public, bringing the discussion of heritage values into the classroom and to young people. An award was presented to the Vancouver Historical Society.

An Award of Merit is conferred upon owner/project manager, Elizabeth

and Margot Keate-West, of Keate & Co. Designers, for the preservation
and thorough restoration of 1826 Blanca Street, a heritage-listed house
by the prominent early architectural firm Sharp & Thompson
in 1913, contributing to the architectural heritage of
Point Grey.

844 Dunlevy

An Award of Honour is conferred upon owners, Graham Elvidge & Kathleen
Stormont, for their heroic efforts in the preservation and exemplary restoration
of the Queen Anne house at 844 Dunlevy, known as ”The Old Queen” contributing
to the conservation of the city’s first neighbourhood and the old
East End, an integral part of Vancouver’s civic and built
heritage. This remarkable restoration advanced the level of education,
awareness,
and advocacy of heritage in the community and the city.
TLC, The Land Conservancy

An Award of Honour is conferred upon TLC, The Land Conservancy,
and the Save Joy Kogawa House Committee, for its outstanding
advocacy efforts
in saving the historic Joy Kogawa House, bringing municipal,
provincial, national and international attention to the effort
with its theme
of “Hope,
Healing and Reconciliation”, thus preserving an important part
of Vancouver’s cultural heritage.
2006 AWARD WINNERS
Awards of Recognition
- Rose Garden Cottage
An Award of Recognition is conferred upon the Vancouver Board of
Parks & Recreation,
Dietlein Construction; and Whistler Forest Products Corporation,
for the 2005 exterior rehabilitation of the Rose Garden Cottage in
Stanley
Park, using log base and siding and employing traditional construction
methods. Included with this renovation was the conversion of the
second floor bedrooms into administrative offices for the Stanley
Park Zoological
Society.
- City Square Property Holdings for Stained Glass Windows
An Award of Recognition is conferred upon City Square Property Holdings
for the preservation of the 1908 stained glass windows from the auditorium
of the Normal School and re- installation in their original location,
supporting the heritage values of the City Square complex which incorporates
both Normal and Model Schools, and in celebration of the 100th Anniversary
of the Model School in 2005.
- Perri Domm & Goodbye Graffiti
An Award of Recognition is conferred upon Perri Domm & Goodbye
Graffiti for the advocacy of heritage preservation activities and
neighbourhood revitalization in developing processes and products
that sensitively
remove graffiti from heritage buildings without damaging valuable
historic materials.
- Roddington Apartments
An Award of Recognition is conferred upon Elizabeth Vander Zaag, owner,
and Charles Haynes, designer/contractor, for the retention and rehabilitation
of the original lower level of this modest vernacular apartment building,
and the consequent enhancement of the streetscape.
- Heritage Hall, Biography of a Building
An Award of Recognition is conferred upon Marian Gilmour, author and
publisher, Gail Buente, co-author, and the Heritage Hall Preservation
Society for Heritage Hall, Biography of a Building, which celebrates
the stories of Heritage Hall in words and photographs as a community
effort in documenting the heritage conservation of this significant
heritage building tracing its history from a post office to a community
facility.

- Leslie Lane House
An Award of Merit is conferred upon
Umberto Menghi, donor, Ramsay Worden Architects, and This Old House
Committee, Vancouver Heritage Foundation,
for the rescue and rehabilitation of the Leslie Lane House, preserving
an “A” listed lane house, a genre once prevalent in Vancouver,
and recreating its original residential use in the sympathetic context
of the Mole Hill community, while also contributing to the Vancouver
Heritage Foundation’s development program. The jury also commends
the City of Vancouver for its stewardship role in this project.
- Albert J. Dana House
An Award of Merit is conferred
upon Keate & Co., Designers, and
Farpoint Architectural, for the tasteful restoration and rehabilitation
of the Albert J. Dana House, 1699 Matthews, preserving an eclectic
1911 Tudor Revival house and contributing to the conservation of
the historic First Shaughnessy neighbourhood.
- Top 10 Endangered Sites and Bus Tour 2005
An Award of Merit is conferred upon the Heritage Vancouver Society
for its education and advocacy in compiling the annual Top Ten Endangered
Sites list and organizing the Bus Tour 2005, a publication and activity
that effectively raises awareness of conservation issues citywide.

An Award
of Honour is conferred upon Simon Fraser University, Paul Merrick
Architecture, and Donald Luxton and Associates, Heritage
Consultant, for the
elegant preservation of an “A” listed temple bank in the heart
of the financial district and its adaptive re-use into a graduate business
school, restoring its exterior façade, and preserving many of
its original features, while providing a highly visible, accessible,
and positive

example of heritage conservation in downtown Vancouver.

Inc., and Makam Construction Ltd.
For: Its contribution to neighbourhood revitalization and as a
good example of expanding a civic heritage resource to further
accommodate community
events and programs, thus also expanding the garden’s public
base and ultimate economic security.
- Charlotte Murray
For: Her contribution to heritage conservation in Vancouver.
Award of Merit
- The Heritage Apple Orchard/Strathcona Community Gardens
Strathcona Community Gardeners Society, Environmental Youth Alliance,
and the Vancouver Foundation
For: Conserving, and promoting the continued use of apple varieties
that were grown during the early years of European settlement in
the Lower
Mainland. This submission is commended for being a community endeavour
which involves the horticultural training of youth and others and suggests
a definition of heritage transcending the traditional emphasis on building
and garden.

For: Its highly successful public effort in building community heritage
