In 1989, Vancouver City Council adopted 27 view cones to protect views to the North Shore mountains, the Downtown skyline and surrounding water bodies. Any development occurring within these cones may be further restricted in height beyond what is specified in the Zoning and Development Bylaw or Official Development Plans. Applicants should consult all the regulations and guidelines applicable to each site that could influence maximum building height. To determine if a site does fall within a viewcone, please follow this link “How to calculate maximum building height.” This outlines the process step by step. The process requires the use of VanMap, an interactive mapping application. You will be able to identify if your site falls within a view cone, exactly the extent of the view cone, and the resulting maximum building height. Please note that you may need to download a plug-in or activeX control to run VanMap. From within VanMap double-clicking on any of the viewcones will open up a detailed information sheet for it specifically.
