Wildlife Feeding Regulation By-law

Anyone feeding wildlife, including coyotes, birds, rodents, squirrels, and raccoons may be subject to a fine of $500. This also applies to all parks and beaches in Vancouver.

You can feed hummingbirds and other birds with feeders on private property if:

• The feeders are inaccessible to other wildlife
• The area is kept clean

Feeding wildlife:

• Reduces their fear of you
• Leads to potential dependency on humans as their food source
• May result in aggressive behaviour and attacks on you or others
• By leaving food on the ground, not disposing of garbage properly, or feeding animals (even indirectly) will encourage them to return to a specific area and put you and other people at higher risk of encounters

Feeding wildlife can lead to:

• Increased public health concerns from the spread of disease and increased rodent activity and infestation
• Accumulation of waste, feces, and filth as a result of leaving food attractants for wildlife
• More animals and birds seeking food from humans 
• Property damage by wildlife like rats, raccoons, and birds
• Undesirable smells and noise from wildlife
• Habituation and change in behaviour
