Benefits of forest restoration
This project will provide:
- Greater biodiversity and healthier ecosystems
- More native trees and understory plants
- A healthier forest canopy and structure
- More shade to help reduce urban heat island effects
- Improved air quality
- Improved stormwater management
- Better wildlife habitat and stronger ecological connections
- Forests that are more resilient to a changing climate
Together, these efforts will strengthen the urban forest in 2 of Vancouver's largest parks and restore forests that more closely resemble BC's natural coastal ecosystems.
We're restoring forested areas in Jericho Beach Park and Vanier Park. By removing invasive plants and planting native trees and understory plants, we're creating healthier, more resilient forests for future generations.
Why are these parks being restored?
The forests in Jericho Beach Park and Vanier Park need support to develop into mature, balanced ecosystems.
Today, they are dominated by young deciduous trees with open canopy cover. Invasive plants, particularly Himalayan blackberry, are preventing native conifers from establishing and growing into the next generation of forest.
