Trees in Vancouver

What you need to know

Vancouver’s urban forest includes every tree in the city—from the 150,000 street trees and 36,000 specimen trees in our golf courses and urban parks, to the more than 1 million trees across 444 hectares of public forests and woodlands managed by City and Park Board staff. It also includes many additional trees and forests on private property.

Removing trees on your property

A tree removal permit allows you to take out, move, or replace trees on your property.

Tree by-laws

Street and park trees

Trees of Stanley Park

Stanley Park in Vancouver has a variety of trees – some centuries old – like western red cedar, bigleaf maple, and Douglas fir.

Street tree canopy expansion

We’re working with the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation to bring more greenery to the city by expanding our street tree canopy.

Boulevard landscaping

Boulevard landscaping encroachment is when trees and bushes are overgrown and impede streets, curbs, and boulevards.

Caring for trees

Adopt a tree

Volunteer for Adopt a tree, a program for people looking to help young trees in their neighbourhood by watering them in the summer months.

Christmas tree recycling

Attend a tree chipping event, set out your tree for collection, or bring it to the Vancouver Landfill or Transfer Station for free.
