These rules apply to all public sector employees, volunteers, contractors, and service providers.

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act External website, opens in new tab (FIPPA) is the privacy legislation applicable to BC government organizations (public bodies).

Section 69 of FIPPA requires public bodies to publish a directory of collected personal information. Personal information banks (PIBs) are descriptions of personal information that is organized and retrievable by an individual's name or by a number, symbol, or other element that identifies that individual. 

The PIB documents how the public body manages its personal information holdings. It also helps the public identify where their personal information is stored.

If you have concerns about your privacy, start by contacting us to address your issue. 

Submit your complaint in writing to [email protected] or phone 3-1-1 (Outside Vancouver: 604-873-7000).  Provide as much detail as you can to help us understand your complaint. It may take up to 30 days to respond.

The commissioner is an independent officer of the legislature of British Columbia. Their role includes:

• Monitoring how government organizations respond to your requests for access to information and how they protect the privacy of your personal information
• Protecting your rights under the act
• Resolving disputes in a fair and unbiased manner

Law enforcement officials are public bodies that may request access to records or video surveillance for an investigation under section 33(3)(d) and/or section 33(2)(o) of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) External website, opens in new tab.
