Artist call for Origins

Land acknowledgement

Vancouver is situated on the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

This land, stewarded since time immemorial by the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh-speaking peoples, was never ceded to the Crown.

The term “unceded” acknowledges the enduring presence, jurisdiction, and inherent rights that these Nations continue to hold. It reminds us that the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ peoples remain deeply connected to their homelands.

A call for Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh artists

Our Public Art Program invites Indigenous artists who self-identify as xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, or səlilwətaɬ to design permanent public artworks that reflect cultural origin stories.

Three artists, one from each Nation, will be selected to create works that celebrate their community’s heritage and values. The artworks will be installed in downtown Vancouver and shaped by collaboration with each artist’s Nation.
