10th Avenue bikeway improvements

Over 500,000 bike trips are made on 10th Avenue every year, making it one of the busiest east-west bikeways in Vancouver’s cycling network.

10th Avenue bikeway improvements

The 10th Avenue bikeway extends from Trafalgar Street to Victoria Drive.

We have been making improvements along the corridor so it is safer and more comfortable for people walking, biking, and rolling. These include Arbutus Link, Hospital Zone (VGH), Kingsway, and Commercial to Victoria.

We’re working to make the corridor more convenient, safe, and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities to walk and cycle.

The 10th Avenue bikeway connects destinations like Vancouver General Hospital, City Hall, and Commercial Drive. It also connects with bike routes that run north and south, like the Ontario Greenway and Arbutus Greenway.

Project goals

  • Make the street safer and more comfortable and accessible for everyone
  • Improve safety and accessibility for people walking, biking and  rolling at busy intersections
  • Accommodate the loading and access needs of nearby businesses, residences, and institutions
  • Retain parking, where possible
  • Support car-free areas along 10th Avenue, introduced gradually through redevelopment and public space improvements over the long term.

What's happening10th Avenue changes between Fir Street and Birch Street

We're planning to change some blocks of 10th Avenue to one-way streets and add a protected bike lane on the busiest block. This will reduce traffic cutting through the neighbourhood, slow vehicles, and make the street safer for everyone.

We're also making it easier to reach the Granville Bridge. In 2028, we plan to build a 2-way protected bike lane that will connect 10th Avenue to the Granville Bridge using the Fir Street ramp.
