  Mithun+One

  The Mithun+One team brings implementation experience with nature-based adaptation work, a spirit of co-learning and demonstrated respect for the relationships between natural and cultural systems and memory. The process of imagining an adapted waterfront along False Creek can address multiple urgent issues:

  • Climate adaptation
  • Economic development
  • Truth and reconciliation

  It will grow a shared understanding of an equitable built environment that shapes culture and ways of knowing public space.

  The team values collective action and believes the work of designing a place has the power to model, practice, share and support healing and self-determination.  

  “The visions that emerge from Sea2City will inspire public conversations and inform actions that can be taken throughout the City and MetroVan” says Deb Guenther, Mithun design partner and project team leader.  The team’s co-leader, Matthijs Bouw, founder of One Architecture, adds, “Building flexibility and adaptability through iterative dialogue will elevate the perspectives of future generations and First Nations.”  

  Prior work by this team includes:

  • Mithun’s living levee proposed during Resilient by Design with the North Richmond, CA community, which is funded and under design.  
  • One Architecture is currently implementing seven follow up projects of the “Big U” vision in Lower Manhattan from Rebuild by Design.
  • Moffatt & Nichol, who has a Vancouver office, has completed more than 30 climate adaptation and sea level rise projects for urban waterfronts.
  • Herrera is working on projects that restore nearshore processes and sustain nearshore habitats and with the City of Vancouver on the Integrated Stormwater Management Plan for the Cambie Corridor and Mithun on major infrastructure projects in Seattle that seek to invest in holistic community interests.

  The PWL+MVRDV Team includes:

  • PWL Partnership Landscape Architects Inc.
  • MVRDV
  • Deltares and Modern Formline Design as the core collaborating consultants

  The combination of PWL Partnership Landscape Architect Inc.’s broad experience of waterfront planning, ecological urbanism, and local knowledge woven with MVRDV’s global perspective and interdisciplinary approach to design, and Deltares’s shoreline engineering experience and Modern Formline Design’s deep understanding of Coast Salish values and cultural expression results in a core team with diverse expertise and unified values.

  For the Sea2City Challenge, our team will find supporting expertise from:

  • WestMar Advisors (local foreshore engineering)
  • G.L. Williams & Associates Ltd. (local biologist),
  • Happy City (socially-focused planning)
  • Modus (urban planning)
  • Goudappel (mobility) 

  The PWL+MVRDV Team:

  • Shares a collective passion for protecting, enhancing, and adapting urban waterfronts in response to climate change
  • Believes diverse perspectives and expertise is required to address the challenges at hand

  The team understands that the cultural forces that shaped False Creek were as formative as the geomorphological and fluvial influences and is deeply dedicated to Sea2City’s restorative, inclusive, and respectful process.

  • Granville Island 2040 Vision
  • River District
  • Numerous waterfront projects and resiliency initiatives in Coastal BC
  • MVRDV and Deltares have worked together on Beyond Lux (e), Towards Ecotopia, and Resilient by Design. This design challenge re-imagined a series of waterfront communities around the San Francisco Bay Area as vibrant, fundamentally public places and vital hubs for disaster response and environmental innovation.
  • Cory Douglas of Modern Formline Design has worked on multiple building, development, cultural, and art projects throughout Coast Salish Territory. Together the team has contributed to countless projects – both built and envisioned, local and global – that have tackled the complex challenges of sea-level rise and its various economic, ecological, and social impacts.
