Take-out containers

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) update

April 9, 2020: The start dates for the single-use item by-laws for straws, utensils, cups, and shopping bags remain unchanged.

However, we're suspending education, outreach, and enforcement for these by-laws until further notice.

The City's priority is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuring essential services continue uninterrupted.

Customers can bring reusable containers to bring home leftovers from restaurants, provided they transfer the food into the container at the table.

What's happening

Reusable container initiative

City staff are working with Vancouver Coastal Health on a reusable container initiative in Vancouver.

The initiative will launch once Vancouver Coastal Health develops a guideline allowing restaurants to:

  1. Create a documented procedure that maintains sanitary conditions.
  2. Get the procedure approved by Vancouver Coastal Health.
  3. Fill take-out orders in reusable containers brought in by customers.
