Reducing construction and demolition waste

Reducing construction and demolition waste is a priority action in Vancouver's Zero Waste 2040 Strategic Plan.

In 2022, building materials made up 31% of waste disposed to landfill or incinerator by Vancouver residents and businesses.

Wood represents about half of this annual waste stream, or 46,000 tonnes each year.

Housing development in Vancouver is expected to grow to help address the national housing crisis. Reducing construction and demolition waste is an important part of supporting sustainable growth in Vancouver.
