What is the Vancouver Heritage Register?
The Vancouver Heritage Register (VHR) is a list of buildings and structures that are formally recognized by Council for their heritage value.
As a land use planning tool, the VHR helps guide staff and Council in making informed decisions, making sure our diverse heritage is integrated into future planning and development.
The Vancouver Heritage Register Policy sets out values-based, equitable, people-centred approaches for heritage:
- Evaluation
- Planning and conservation
- Resource management
It reflects the cultural diversity of Vancouver’s communities.
The VHR includes a Truth-telling Statement created with the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
The Truth-telling Statement acknowledges the VHR’s Eurocentric colonial history, which contributes to the ongoing erasure and marginalization of Indigenous histories and cultural practices.
How to read the VHR
The VHR includes almost 2,300 buildings and structures.
