What you need to know
Places are considered to be added to the Vancouver Heritage Register (VHR) through an application and heritage evaluation process.
Listing a place on the VHR is one way to:
- Identify and spread awareness of the values of place
- Make sure they are integrated into land use planning and development
There are many cultural, historical, and architectural values to qualify for heritage recognition.

What places are eligible to be on the VHR
For a place to be added to the VHR, it must be at least 20 years old and demonstrate evidence of heritage values in one of these categories:
- Cultural heritage:
- Traditions, ways of life, and memories (may be representative of neighbourhood development or significant to community identity)
- Historical association
- Person, community, and organization (associated with an impactful person or historic event or used by the community for cultural practice)
- Architecture
- Design, materials, and technology (a noteworthy designer, architectural, or landscape features)
