How to set out garbage, recycling, and green waste for collection

Green bins will be collected every 2 weeks in January and February

Starting in January 2025, we will collect green bins every 2 weeks (not every week). Green bin collection will line up with residents’ regular garbage day. There is no change to recycling or garbage service.

Weekly green bin service will resume in March.

The change to a bi-weekly green bin schedule in January and February will provide more predictable service for residents, should snow and ice impact our operations. The service change also reduces the wear and tear on equipment and allows time for required safety training for drivers.

An important consideration in the decision to change the green bin schedule is that in winter, volumes are much lower due to fewer yard trimmings and colder temperatures help minimize green bin odours.

On collection day, give your bins some space. To make sure your bins are collected, follow these guidelines:

  1. Set the bins out by 7am.
  2. Make sure to close the lid. Don't let the bins overflow so much that the lid can't close properly.
  3. Place the bins so the arrows on the lids point toward the centre of the lane or the street.
  4. Space your green bin and garbage so there is a least 1 m (3 feet) of space on all sides, and 3.5 m (11.5 feet) of clearance above. Your recycling boxes and bags should be placed 1 m from your garbage or green bin and in such a way that collection crews can access them.
  5. Bring the bins back onto your property after they are emptied.
