Making sure people can easily walk or roll to a grocery store from home is an important piece of our vision for Vancouver.
In 2024, we collaborated with Vancouver Coastal Health to look at how the location of grocery stores and fresh food markets influences health and diet-related diseases. Access to fruits and vegetables can:
- Improve health
- Lower the risk of chronic diseases
- Encourage healthy eating
This work was built on a long partnership under our Healthy City Strategy and was funded by Partnership for Healthy Cities External website, opens in new tab. This project led to the 2025 report, Equitable Access to Healthy Food Retail PDF file (14.8 MB).
Vancouver neighbourhoods with less access to healthy food
A key finding of this report was identifying Food Retail Priority Zones PDF file (14.8 MB) — areas in the city where people have both fewer grocery options and lower incomes. These zones tend to be in the south and east parts of the city.
Additionally, the report identified land-use policies and programs that we can explore to improve access to healthy food.
