  Walking the Current

  Holly Schmidt created Walking the Current, a sensorial walk along St George Street from 8th to 5th Avenue.

  This guided walk invites participants to engage their senses as they consider their relationship to the street and the historic stream beneath it.

  The walk is available in both print and audio on Shape Your City. This project is offered in support of the St George Rainway community engagement.

  The Understory

  Green water infrastructure brings nature into the city to capture and clean our rainwater before returning it to our atmosphere and our surrounding oceans.

  Schmidt was interested in the significant role plants play in green infrastructure projects. She looked to the fern, a common plant in the understory of Vancouver forests, as design inspiration for the cast iron lids that identify green infrastructure specific utilities.

  Look underfoot to see these lids as they are installed in the city.

  Understories

  Understories highlights the often unnoticed social and physical infrastructure that shapes the city through a quarterly story shared through internal communications.

  For the first story, Schmidt introduced a team of falconers from Pacific Northwest Raptors and shared how they work with hawks to disperse gulls and other scavengers.

  Volunteer Recognition Tote Bag

  As with many events in 2020, the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner for the Adopt-a-Block and Neighbourhood Cleanup Party programs was cancelled due to the pandemic.

  Holly Schmidt created a canvas tote bag design inspired by local flora, fauna, and fungi in Vancouver to be mailed to the 2020 volunteers in acknowledgment of their work keeping the shores and streets of Vancouver clean.
