Bike couriers

Bike couriers operate a cycle to transport goods.

If you want to operate a courier bicycle for a licensed courier company, you must be 19 years of age or older.

While operating a courier bicycle, you must always carry photo ID that shows your name, current address, and date of birth.

Steps to getting a bike courier licence

Step 1: Write exam
A. Prepare for the exam

Prepare for the written bike courier exam by reviewing the courier study package.
- Download the courier study package (545 KB)
B. Write exam and pay fee

Email a completed bicycle courier application form (172 KB) with a copy of your photo ID to vehicle4hire@vancouver.ca. A representative will arrange for you to take an online exam once the exam fee is paid.

You will be notified immediately if you have passed or failed. A pass is 16 correct answers out of 20 questions. If you fail the exam, you may rewrite it on another day.

- Write or rewrite the bike courier exam: $45
Step 2: Get bike courier plate and pay fee
After you pass the bike courier exam:
- Buy your bicycle courier plate
- Attach it to your bicycle
The plate expires every year on December 31.

Fees

The fee costs the same no matter when you buy the plate. Replacing a lost or stolen plate is the same cost as a new one.
- Buy or replace a bike courier plate: $22
- Fees are referenced from Schedule A of the Vehicles for Hire By-law 6066.
Step 3: Renew your plate every year in January
You need to purchase a new decal in order to renew your existing bike courier plate.

If you have not had a bicycle courier plate in the last three consecutive years, you will have to write and pass the bike courier exam.
