Keeping our streets, sidewalks, and green spaces safe and clean for everyone to enjoy is a City priority.

Our sanitation services branch and local non-profit organizations working under our Street Cleaning Grant Program, play an integral role in keeping our city clean, vibrant and thriving.

Our crews provide services 365 days a year, with the majority of work performed at night to avoid interrupting traffic and pedestrians.

Our services

Garbage and litter collection
- Daily emptying of 3,500 garbage and recycling receptacles from sidewalks, the Seawall, residential areas, and parks
- 250 additional receptacles are added along beaches, seawalls, and in parks annually during the high-season
- 150 new sidewalk receptacle enclosures were added in 2025
- Collection of litter and hazardous materials such as needles from City property
- Daily collection of abandoned and illegally dumped waste from residential and commercial areas
Sweeping and cleaning
- Mechanical sweeping of streets, sidewalks, and bikes routes
- Mechanical flushing of streets and lanes in the downtown core and DTES, with increased frequency during summer months to minimize odour and buildup of debris
- Sweeping and clearing of leaves throughout the fall and winter months
- Clearing of snow from streets and public sidewalks

Guidelines for pick up	Scenarios where we will not pick up
We will attend if the animal is on City or Park property.	We will not attend if the animal is: On private property: Inside a private residence Inside a garage Inside a fenced yard (front or back) On a porch or patio In any area that is restricted
We will pick up animals and birds including marine life, such as seals or any other wildlife washed up on a beach.	We will not pick up: Dead owned pets Dead wild life, such as bears or cougars Animals over 150 lbs Dead animals in trees or other high places If the animal is on private property and it is during the evening If necessary, the animal can be moved onto the edge of the property (example, to the lane) so that we can collect the animal.
