Since opening in 2010, the Neighbourhood Energy Utility (NEU) has grown significantly. It now supplies low carbon energy for heating and hot water to 6.4 million square feet of mixed use buildings, including Science World and Emily Carr University, and is projected to continue growing.
The NEU currently aims to deliver 70% of its energy from renewable sources. A significant portion of the NEU’s renewable energy supply comes from sewage heat recovery, where the latent heat from sewage is captured using a heat pump process at the False Creek Energy Centre, located under the Cambie Bridge.
The Energy Centre currently operates 3.2 megawatts of sewage heat recovery capacity. The sewage heat recovery expansion project is underway to install an additional 6.6 megawatts of sewage heat recovery equipment which will enable the NEU to continue to achieve its long term low carbon performance targets.
What's happeningConstruction begins January 2022
Work will primarily take place within the False Creek Energy Centre with some disruption to the main plaza and John McBride Community Garden. After construction is complete, the community garden will be reinstated and the plaza will be reconstructed to look like new.

Related projects and policies
Project funding
The project has secured federal and provincial grant funding of up to $10.2 million through the cleanBC Communities Fund, and up to $550,000 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund.
The total project cost is $14 million and completion is expected in late 2022.
