Steps to getting or removing a green bin

  Step 1: Choose the right size

  How much yard waste and food scraps does your household create by collection day? If your bin is always filled to the top, consider a larger bin or an extra bin.

  Annual rates are billed to your property taxes for green bin collection.

  When flat-rated utility services change after the annual utility or main property tax bill, we will recalculate the charges prior to the next annual billing. This may result in a new bill being issued.

  Step 2: Make your order or request

  Option A: Replacing missing bins with same-sized bins or reporting damaged bins

  Homeowners and tenants may report damage to bins or request same-sized bins to replace missing bins.

  Option B: Getting extra bins and changing sizes

  Only a homeowner can order extra bins or change sizes.

  Phone 3-1-1. Our representatives will ask for your:

  • Name, address, and daytime phone number
  • Service requested
  • Current bin size
  • Bin size wanted

  Important information Each property owner will be allowed to change the size of their garbage bin once per calendar year, without charge. A fee of $25.00 will be charged for any additional change in that calendar year. These fees will appear on the property owner's​​​​​​​ main property tax notice distributed in late May.

  Option C: Removing bins

  Only a homeowner can request we remove bins. Bins may only be removed if:

  • Property is being demolished or will be vacant for longer than 1 month
  • You have private collection services and no longer need City service

  • Name, address, and daytime phone number
  • Current bin size

  Important information You will continue to be charged a fee for the smallest sized cart as part of your annual utility fees.​​​​​​​

  Step 3: Label your bin

  Once you receive your new green bin, write your address in the white space provided on the lid of the bin.

  Bins are the property of the City of Vancouver and must remain usable. Bins are permanently damaged if they are marked outside the designated white space on the lid.

  Replacing damaged bins increases the cost of service for customers.
