Steps to getting or removing a green bin

  Step 1: Choose the right size

  How much yard waste and food scraps does your household create by collection day? If your bin is always filled to the top, consider a larger bin or an extra bin.

  Annual rates are billed to your property taxes for green bin collection.

  When flat-rated utility services change after the annual utility or main property tax bill, we will recalculate the charges prior to the next annual billing. This may result in a new bill being issued.

  Step 2: Submit your bin request

  Bin request guidelines

  • Only the property owner or a person authorized by the property owner can request extra bins, change bin sizes, remove bins, request new service, or cancel service. Property owners, as well as tenants, can report damage to bins, or request same-sized bins to replace missing bins.
  • Each property owner will be allowed to change the size of their garbage bin once per calendar year, without charge. A fee of $25 will be charged for any additional change in that calendar year. These fees will appear on the property owner's main property tax notice distributed in late May.
  • If you are cancelling service, you will continue to be charged a fee for the smallest sized bin as part of your annual utility fees.

  Access and manage your garbage and green bin service online or in the VanCollect app:

  • Report damaged or missing bins
  • Order additional bins or change bin size
  • Request removal of bins
  • Request new service or cancel service

  Option B: Call 3-1-1

  Our customer service representative will ask for your:

  • Name, address, and daytime phone number
  • Description of the request  
  • Current bin size
  • Bin type and size requested

  Step 3: Label your bin

  When you receive your new green bin, write your address with a permanent marker in the white space on the lid and record the serial number which is located on the front of the bin.  

  Information icon  Bins are considered permanently damaged and not reusable if they are marked outside the designated white space on the lid. When marking your bin, stay within the white area.

  Step 4: Maintain your bin

  Bins are the property of the City of Vancouver, and must remain usable at all times. However, it is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain their bin and keep it clean.     

  Replacing damaged bins increases the cost of service for all customers.
