Between 2016 and 2024, we tested a dog waste collection and disposal pilot in several parks.
The purpose of the pilot was to:
- Explore the feasibility of collecting dog waste separately
- Inform decisions on larger-scale collection options
What we learned will guide a city-wide program, if pursued in the future.
What we learned
The pilot provided key lessons that will help shape future dog waste collection programs:
- Contamination in the dog waste (red) bins was low.
- Most dog waste still went into nearby garbage bins—only 25% was collected in the red bins, while 75% ended up in regular garbage.
- Current collection and processing is highly manual.
- A larger program would need some form of automation or improved technology to be more efficient.
- Expanded dog waste processing solutions are needed to support the region
