What you need to know
We are converting resident parking only (RPO) regulations citywide over the next few years. We are surveying blocks to determine if RPO will be replaced with resident permit parking (RPP) regulations or become unregulated.
The residential parking only (RPO) program was cancelled in 2010 by Council and replaced by residential permit parking (RPP). Before 2010, regulatory signs included:
- Resident parking only (RPO) - enforceable on a complaint basis only
- Resident permit parking (RPP) - a regularly patrolled fee-based permit system
Converting the remaining resident only parking (RPO) zones over the next few years will balance the needs of service providers, visitors, and residents.
If a block changes to resident permit parking (RPP), a combination of full-time permit parking and time limit (except with permit) regulations will be installed. Permit holders can park in the RPP zones at all times.

Tell us your preferences
If you live on a block with RPO regulations, you’ll get a survey letter in the mail with instructions on how to fill it out online. If you don’t have access to a computer, we’ll give you a phone number to call.
Tell us if you prefer:
- An upgrade to resident permit parking (RPP) - a regularly patrolled fee-based permit system, OR
- Removal of existing resident parking only (RPO) - leaving the block unregulated
Note You must complete the survey by the deadline listed on the survey letter.
Results will be compiled after the survey closes; if:
- More than 50% of households are in favour of converting the RPO zone to an RPP zone, parking restrictions will be installed based on resident needs identified in the survey
- Fewer than 50% of households are in favour of an RPP zone, the existing RPO zone will be removed and the street will be unregulated
Note You'll be notified of the survey outcome and the updated parking regulations by mail. Parking regulations will be replaced with permit parking regulations or removed in the months after survey results have been compiled.
Note Permits can be purchased after the signs are installed.
Purchase a residential parking permit
If a RPP zone has been established in your area, residents may buy an annual parking permit after the signs are installed.
