What the video covers

This video explains racism and systemic racism, and how they impact people of Black and African-diaspora descent. It also highlights 4 priorities identified in our 2022 interim report to address anti-Black racism:

  • Partnering with Black community members and businesses to reduce poverty
  • Eliminating systemic racism within the city of Vancouver
  • Investigating how Black people are impacted by City-led programs
  • Integrating culturally relevant urban planning processes

Each February, since 2011, the mayor has issued a proclamation recognizing and celebrating Black History Month.

In 2025, we commissioned graphic artist Yaimel López Zaldívar to produce original artwork as a visual companion to our Anti-Black Racism and Cultural Redress Framework and ongoing priority initiatives.

Yaimel López Zaldívar is a Vancouver-based graphic artist whose bold, vibrant designs explore identity and culture.
