  How we use the community kitchen for engagement

  This project uses the community kitchen to explore how food—its cultivation, preparation, consumption, and presentation—serves as a form of cultural and creative expression. Our goal is to highlight the community kitchen as a cultural space.

  Across all cultures, food can:

  • Bring people together
  • Spark memories of home or away
  • Inspire creativity and joy
  • Initiate discussion, whether around a dinner table or in a fragrant herb garden

  Our goals are to:

  • Create community kitchens by supporting food-based creatives
  • Support artists working in community settings
  • Encourage interactions and collaboration between the artist(s) and communities
  • Highlight the importance of food systems, food security, and sustainability
  • Celebrate food as it bring us all to the table (literally and metaphorically)

  Eligibility and budget

  The project is open to Metro Vancouver artists and artist teams working in any discipline.

  Budget

  • Artist fee: $13,000
  • Materials: $2,500

  How to apply

  Applications deadline: Saturday, August 31, 2024

  1. Review the application guidelines PDF file (168 KB)
  2. Review the community centre profile PDF file (80 KB) 
  3. Gather your supporting documents: 
     • A current CV
     • Include examples of your current art form in either of the following media: photos, video, or audio (up to 10 images, excess items will not be presented to the jury)
       • Images:
         • File format: JPG or TIFF
         • File size: less than 3 MB
         • Resolution: less than 300 dpi
       • Video:
         • File format: QuickTime, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, or Flash Player
         • Duration: all samples combined must not exceed a maximum of 10 minutes Information icon Any media that surpasses the cumulative 10 minute mark will not be viewed
       • Audio:
         • File format: MP3, AIFF files, or online platforms (example: SoundCloud)
         • Duration: all samples combined must not exceed a maximum of 10 minutes. Information icon Any media that surpasses the cumulative 10 minute mark will not be viewed.)
  4. A documentation list of your works and their viewing order:
     • File format: PDF or DOC
     • Include your name and for each work, its title, media, format (example: QuickTime, MP3, or full online address), dimensions (if applicable), location, and date
     • Mac users must include “.jpg” at the end of each image file
