Greenway: Fraser River Trail
The
Fraser River Trail is Vancouver's only riverside greenway. It follows
as close to the north shore of the North Arm of the Fraser River as possible
and when completed, it will connect Pacific Spirit Regional Park to the
City of Burnaby's trail system. Several sections of the Fraser River Trail
are in place, including trails through Riverfront Park, Gladstone-Riverside
Park, Fraser River Park, McCleery Golf Course and Deering Island Park.
Industrial roads parallel to the river connect the completed sections
of the trail. The remaining sections of the trail will be completed as
riverfront opportunities arise.
The
Fraser River Trail is a study in contrasts. Some portions are busy and
noisy with sawmills, log booms, tug boats and other river traffic while
other parts seem slow moving and far removed from the city. Sites of First
Nations villages and early farm settlements are located along the trail.
Destinations and areas of interest along this Greenway include:
- Foreshore areas - fish spawning grounds and habitat, restoration areas
that can be viewed at Gladstone-Riverfront Park and at Fraser River
Park
- River environment - mud flats, booming grounds, remnant river edge
vegetation, pioneer forest and small streams such as Vivian Creek
- Public and private golf courses - Point Grey, McCleery, Marine Drive,
Musqueum and Fraserview
- Southlands neighbourhood - this is the last agriculturally zoned land
in Vancouver - equestrian centers, plant nurseries
- Parks - Riverfront, Gladstone-Riverside, Fraser River and Deering
Island Parks
- Sports activities - walking, running, cycling, fishing, golf, sports
fields, children's playground (Riverfront Park)
