Transfer & Landfill Operations
The Transfer and Landfill Operations Branch is responsible for the disposal of over 500,000 tones of municipal solid waste each year. The branch operates two facilities, the Vancouver South Transfer Station and the Vancouver Landfill. Staff are responsible for the day-to-day operations of both facilities. Positions within the branch include residential drop-off and recycling area attendants, transfer station tipping floor attendants, compost facility operators, truck drivers and equipment operators. Labourers are being hired for both locations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Please submit a current BC Drivers Abstract with your application (available through ICBC)
- Class I or III Driver's License
- Occupational First Aid Certificate, Level 2 or 3
- Ability and/or experience to operate mobile equipment such as back-hoes or front end loaders
- Ability to work shift work and at either location.

Sanitation Operations
The Sanitation Branch is involved in the daily collection of residential garbage, recycling and yard trimmings for over 90,000 households and has a 365 day street cleaning operation. The work involves heavy manual, outdoor labour preformed in all weather conditions. Types of work include: the collection of residential garbage, recycling and yard trimmings and garbage removal from streets.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Class I or III Driver's License
- Occupational First Aid Certificate
- Ability and/or experience to work on mobile equipment such as garbage or recycling trucks or mechanical street sweepers
- Ability to work shift work

Street Operations
The Streets Operations Branch is the largest of the five operating branches in the Engineering Department for the City of Vancouver. At present it employees approximately 299 men and women with that number increasing during the summer months. Streets Operations is split into two areas of responsibility, construction and maintenance. The Streets crew is responsible for the majority of all construction, reconstruction and the paving of roads, curbs, sidewalks and greenways in the City. The maintenance crew provides maintenance for all of these areas as well as responds to concerns from citizens on issues such as potholes, boulevard problems, out-of-elevation sidewalks, lanes, grass cutting, flooding and snow and ice control. Recent projects include the reconstruction of sidewalks, curbs and full-width paving of City streets such as Oak Street, Granville Street, Burrard Street and 12th Avenue. The maintenance crew has also been involved in a number of rebuilding projects such as sidewalks, roadways and lanes in residential neighbourhoods of Vancouver. The Streets Operations Branch is an innovative Branch that is constantly seeking new methods and procedures to improve the quality of work and provide better service to our customers, the citizens of Vancouver.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Occupational First Aid Certificate
- Traffic Control or Safety related courses
- Experience in performing general construction tasks, cement finishing, form setting, or asphalt raking.

Sewer Operations
The Sewer Operations Branch is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the City's waste and storm water collection systems. Our network of infrastructure is complex in scope and amounts to approximately 2,000 kilometres of pipe-line along with approximately 45,000 catch-basins and 27 pumping stations. The Sewer Operations group has over 200 employees who perform a variety of services for residents of Vancouver with continual utility service. The work performed is generally construction-based requiring physical labour in a demanding environment. We take safety seriously and are considered leaders in the industry when it comes to excavation, shoring and installation of the City's underground sewer and drainage system. Water Operations
The City of Vancouver 's Water Operations Branch is a 130-member team engaged in the uninterrupted delivery of an adequate supply of high-quality water to the residents of Vancouver. Operations Workers who join our team are involved in a variety of field work related to the construction, repair and ongoing maintenance of the water distribution network. The work is diverse in nature and includes various activities associated with rehabilitating the underground piping network throughout the City. Other work typically performed includes repairing leaks, maintaining fire hydrants, monitoring and calibrating water meters and flow control valves as well as responding to public inquiries. The duties of an Operations Worker are varied and rewarding. The work can also be intensive at times and is often performed during periods of inclement weather. Equipment Services Branch Information
The Equipment Services Branch provides equipment and shop services to support all of the departments within the City of Vancouver. The design and manufacturing of vehicles, equipment and products all happens under one roof, which creates an interesting and high energy environment. The branch is responsible for the technical specification of vehicles and equipment, the design, manufacturing and repair of truck bodies and life-cycle costing. Ongoing projects include minimizing emissions, evaluating new technology such as electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicles, and upgrading vehicles that will improve the performance of the fleet. Branch staff include: trades mechanics, fabricators, carpenters and auto-body workers as well as machinists. Apprenticeship training is provided to ensure a progressive career path is available.
