The City of Vancouver is the largest municipal employer in BC, providing a multitude of public services including Police, Fire, Engineering and Parks. This requires the maintenance and repair of an extensive fleet of vehicles and equipment, managed by our Equipment Services Branch. Fleet servicing occurs primarily at the fully equipped main garage located at Manitoba Yards in Vancouver as well as other satellite facilities. This busy environment offers a variety of work from small and heavy equipment to automobiles and heavy trucks, as well as plant and facilities maintenance, manufacturing and building maintenance.
To qualify, you will need:
- grade 12 or equivalent preferred
- a B.C. Trades Qualification or Interprovincial Certificate
- labouring experience
- knowledge of safe work procedures
- the physical ability to lift and push heavy objects
- the ability to deal tactfully with the public and a willingness to learn
- a valid B.C. Class 5 Driver's License
- a Class 1 or 3 Driver's License with air endorsement and level 2 or 3 Occupational First Aid are assets
Trades are required to work outside in all weather conditions.
Applicants being considered will be required to take a pre-employment medical with the City's medical provider, at no cost to the recipient.
Work location:
Equipment Services has four locations, three in the City of Vancouver and one at Burns Bog, Delta. We currently operate on two shifts: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 3:40 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

There is a comprehensive benefits package and shift differential where applicable. Along with varied and challenging work, our employees also enjoy in-house and on-site training, shift rotation, fortnights on the afternoon-shift, and tool allowance. Premiums are also included for first aid attendants.

Electricians
We are accepting resumes for future opportunities for Journey person Electricians in the Traffic & Electrical Operations Branch of Engineering Services. We are looking for candidates who are able to perform skilled shop and field duties at the journey person level entailing the installation, repair and maintenance of facilities, street lighting and traffic signal systems.
Some phases of the duties may be more complex and difficult, involving the use of independent judgment in determining methods and procedures in solving unusual and complex problems related to re-lamping of street lighting fixtures; replacing street lighting poles and fixtures; installing, maintaining or upgrading traffic control signals; responding to traffic control signal malfunctions and responding to Motor Vehicle Accidents involving the City's electrical plant.
To qualify, you will need:
- completion of grade 12 supplemented by the successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the Electrical Trades
- an Electricians Certificate of Qualification for the Province of British Columbia
- extensive experience with traffic signal and street lighting installation and maintenance is required, with experience in industrial electrical or commercial work environments considered an asset
- the ability to read Electrical Services work and interpret complex wiring diagrams and familiarity and knowledge of SCADA systems is required
- demonstrated knowledge of the hazards and safety aspects of the trade
- the ability to work on aerial lift trucks
- experience in working with sewer and water pump stations is an asset along with the ability to read and follow construction drawings
- excellent interpersonal, organizational skills and both excellent written and verbal communication skills

Electricians are required to work a variety of shifts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Compensation:
$35.26 per hour plus shift premium where applicable, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

Tire Workers
Applications are accepted year round for future opportunities for Tire Workers in our Engineering Services Branch.
To qualify, you will need:
- completion of grade 10 supplemented by several years of experience and courses related to the automotive industry or heavy-duty trucks and equipment tire industry, tire inventory management, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- considerable knowledge of current tire repairs methods, materials, and tools
- the ability to exercise considerable judgment and skill when repairing tires for example; stripping, repairing, assembling and replacing a variety of vehicle tires wheels and rims
- skill in the use and care of tools essential for tire repair and servicing and in the operation of various vehicles
- proven ability to repair and service a variety of tires for vehicles and equipment, maintain routine notes on work orders and other clerical records
- the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public to ensure customer service needs are addressed in a timely manner
- the flexibility to work in a rapidly changing environment with competing schedules and deadlines
- a valid B.C Class 5 Driver's Licence and a satisfactory driving record
- a valid Forklift Operator certificate or the ability to obtain one

Tire Workers are unionized positions and the entry-level pay rate is $24.20 per hour, plus a comprehensive benefits package and shift differential where applicable.

Apprentice Electricians
We are accepting resumes for future opportunities for Apprentice Electricians in the Traffic & Electrical Operations Branch of Engineering Services based at National Yards in Vancouver. The Branch requests resumes outlining candidate qualifications and training. These positions are open to male and female candidates.
To qualify, you will need:
- completion of Grade twelve and the completion of a recognized pre-apprenticeship training course in the trade of Electrician would be an asset
- knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in the electrical trade
- some knowledge of the hazards and safety aspects of the trade
- some knowledge of the use and care of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the electrical trade
- excellent organizational, interpersonal skills and both excellent written and verbal communication skills
- proven ability to work well in a team environment
- ability to master the manual skill and technical knowledge involved in the Electrician trade
