Metered Parking
The first parking meters in Vancouver appeared on city streets in 1947 to help deal with growing parking pressures. With now approximately 9,000 meter spaces in the City, the goal remains the same - to encourage the turnover of vehicles in areas where there is a demand for short-term parking.
- Hours of operation – Meters are in effect from 9am to 10pm daily, except in areas where there are rush hour and other regulations. Always check the meter for restrictions before parking.
- Days of operation – Meters are in effect seven days a week, including statutory holidays.
- Time limit- All meters in Vancouver have at least a two-hour time limit, with some now allowing three-hour parking.
- Rates - $1.00 to $6.00 per hour depending on the area.
- Payment options – Motorists can purchase time at meters using coins, pay-by-phone and more recently- credit cards

Proposed new metered areas
Parking meters are being proposed for areas where there is an observed, measured and high-demand for parking and where commercial/retail customers will benefit from finding a place to park. Learn more
Proposed meter rate changes
Some changes to meter rates have been implemented (as of January 1, 2011) to better reflect the observed demand for on-street parking and to ensure that parking is available to serve businesses and their patrons. This included rate increases where competition for curbside parking was high, and rate decreases where parking at previous 2010 prices was found to be underutilized. Current meter rate map
