Frequently Asked Questions
What is KVS?
Keep Vancouver Spectacular (KVS) is our annual city-wide spring campaign that brings together individuals, businesses and neighbourhood groups to participate in community cleanup projects. By removing garbage and grafitti in their own neighbourhood citizens gain a sense of community and help make Vancouver a great place to live.
When do these cleanups take place?
Most of the KVS cleanup events take place in May but there are community groups who organize cleanups throughout the year.
Who can help?
Everyone. If you live or work or own property in Vancouver or even if you are just passing through you can help. Put on some gloves, pick up a broom and come join in the fun! It doesn’t take much time and it makes a big difference.
What are the benefits?
By pitching in and helping clean up your neighbourhood you not only create a healthier and cleaner environment but you also help build strong and proud communities.
Do I need to bring my own bags and brooms?
No, you don’t have to bring anything (except your enthusiasm). Through your Block Captain, the City will supply you with garbage bags, gloves and all the cleanup tools you’ll need.
What does a Block Captain do?
Block Captains are volunteers that help organize each cleanup event. Block Captains would be responsible for liaising with the City, distributing the gloves, bags and cleanup tools as well contacting all the volunteers in their area.
What if I don’t want to be a Block Captain?
You can be a volunteer on a cleanup team that’s already scheduled a cleanup. Contact KVS at 604.871.6544 or Keep Vancouver Spectacular to sign up.
Can I add garbage and items I no longer want to the garbage collection after a community cleanup?
Sorry, only garbage and debris collected from the streets and other outside areas during the cleanup will be collected. But, Vancouver residents may dispose of household garbage for free through the month of May at the Vancouver Landfill. See the events schedule for details.
