How To Set Out Your Recyclables

IMPORTANT!!

All blue boxes, blue bags, and yellow bags (from houses) and carts (from apartments and if required to do so) must be set out by 7:00 am!

Blue Box Program

Blue Box and Bags

Set our your blue bag, yellow bag, and blue box, when full, by 7:00 am on your collection day.

Please place the bags BESIDE the blue box and lay the bags on their sides to keep the rain out.

Apartment Program

Carts

Be sure to set out your carts by 7:00 am if you are required to set them out.

Lids on the apartment carts must close. Do not overfill the carts or they can't be dumped. If you need extra carts, call 3-1-1 (or 604.873.7000 from outside Vancouver city limits) .

  • Remove waxed/plastic liners
  • Flatten all boxes
  • Cut cardboard into small pieces that fit easily into the yellow bag or the Paper Products cart
  • Remove food, paper and plastic from pizza boxes
  • Place yellow bags on their sides to keep rain out

  • Remove and discard lids
  • Flatten all containers as much as possible

Contamination:

Collection crews will NOT empty any set outs (carts/blue boxes/bags) that contain unacceptable items and a contamination tag will be attached to outline why the set out was not picked up. Please remove the unacceptable items from your setout before your next scheduled pick up day.

Please see the Take Back Programs section below on available options to recycle some of the unacceptable items.

TAKE BACK Programs:

Some items that are not accepted for collection in the Blue Box or Apartment Recycling Program can be recycled through the industry-led take back programs. Residents are able to return certain items to the industry for recycling. The following is a list of take back programs currently available (please check individual website for the drop-off depot nearest you):

Tips: Other Containers Recycling

Currently, there are no formal Take Back programs for materials such as Tetrapak soup containers, meal replacement beverage containers, plastic containers made of #3, #6 and #7 including Styrofoam, and plastic bags (although some grocery stores may take these materials back as part of their store programs).  For additional information and disposal options, please contact the Recycling Council of BC at 604.732.9253 or at hotline@rcbc.bc.ca.
