Litter cans
As part of its new street furniture program, the City is working to deploy new, more effective litter cans that better coordinate with the streetscape.
In addition to regular litter cans, the City is piloting a program to have a litter receptacle in place at every bus stop that has a bench or bus shelter. For this purpose, the City is deploying smaller litter "buckets" for use at bus stops with relatively low usage, such as in residential areas.
The City has also installed solar-powered compacting cans in certain project areas. These cans have a much greater capacity than conventional cans and do not need to be emptied as frequently, which means that both the cost and environmental impact of servicing them is greatly reduced.
The Sanitation Operations branch, whose staff empty the litter cans on a daily basis as part of their duties to keep the City clean, adjudicates the placement of all litter cans. This ensures that the cans are distributed in an efficient, equitable manner that maximizes the benefit to the public.
