COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The People - Community Engagement
Discussion of making Carrall Street as a special pedestrian route has taken place in the community for more than twenty years. Through extensive public engagement throughout the project development process, the Carrall Street Greenway project aims to build partnerships between City and the community. The greenway is designed to reflect the different needs of the diverse local communities. The local communities will continued to be engaged as the greenway is being completed by involving local residents in the programming of public spaces.

Stewardship Group
The Greenway has been developed in collaboration with the local communities, including business and property owners, local residents, community organizations and other individuals.

The Carrall Stewardship Group was established in 2002 as a venue to engage the community in the greenway design process. The group consists of local area residents, property and business owners and other stakeholders from Chinatown, Gastown and the Downtown Eastside. It has been successful in bringing together community representatives to work collaboratively on community engagement, design development and public space programming along the future greenway corridor.

In partnership with the Stewardship Group, City staff organized an extensive public process, including a design charrette, an open house and six workshops to discuss design concepts for the greenway.

In March 2006, the Stewardship Group hosted a Sustainability Forum at Centre A Gallery. The event was successful in attracting over 130 people. Many creative ideas about green design, arts and culture and social susatianbility were generated at the forum.

Alexander Street
In response to the development of a pump station on Alexander Street by the GVRD, local residents have initiated a process to bring improvements to the street. The plan includes public art, traffic calming, greening and other streetscaping components. The local community, in collaboration with City Staff, has organized a number of workshops and charrettes to gather local feedback.

Youth Video Project
This project will train several inner city youth to produce videos documenting the public and community involvement process that is being carried out in developing the Carrall Greenway and the companion Public Art, Storyscapes, Alexander Street and Sustainability initiatives.
