Neighbourhood GreenwaysNeighbourhood Greenways

Neighbourhood Bench AreaNeighbourhood Greenways are smaller scale connections that respond to local needs identified by the neighbourhood. They are distinguished from City Greenways by four criteria:

  • They are initiated by local residents
  • They connect local community amenities such as parks, schools, libraries, community centers, shopping streets and places of special meaning, for example: a group of heritage houses, an interesting street or a corner store.
  • They reflect local character and identity by providing opportunities to express the unique character of the area and by adding details and activities to the public landscape.
  • They consist of smaller projects and shorter routes and are maintained by the community once completed.

The Neighbourhood Greenways that have been completed so far, demonstrate the range of possibilities for public involvement in community improvement projects, as well as the commitment and resourcefulness of local residents and artists.

We view these Neighbourhood Greenways as partnerships between the community and the City. Although the communities are expected to take the lead in these projects, Greenways staff provides assistance in design, development and construction. Since the process is community driven, a Neighbourhood Greenway may take a number of years to develop. Interest and energy tends to fluctuate throughout the process therefore, organization and long-term commitment by the community group are key to the success of any project.

To initiate a Neighbourhood Greenway:

  • Develop your idea
  • Gather community support for the idea, ideally through a residents' association
  • Develop a preliminary plan based on local support, community participation, improved neighbourhood connections and open spaces
  • Submit your plan to the Greenways Branch of Engineering Services for review
  • If the proposal is feasible and meets the criteria, the project will be scheduled into the Greenways work plan

Proposals should be mailed to:
