Neighbourhood Greenways

Neighbourhood Greenways are small-scale, local connections for pedestrian and cyclist that respond to a neighbourhood’s unique needs, linking parks, natural areas, historic sites, amenities and commercial streets. They provide opportunities to express the unique character of the neighbourhood and often include public art which adds further interest and distinctiveness to the project.

Neighbourhood Greenway projects are initiated by local residents and are seen as a partnership between the City and the community. The City provides assistance in the design, development and construction of Neighbourhood Greenways, however, the community is expected to take the lead and to maintain the space once completed. Since the process is community driven, a Neighbourhood Greenway may take a number of years to develop. Interest and energy fluctuate throughout the process therefore, organization and long-term commitment by the community group are key to the success of any project.

The existing Neighbourhood Greenways in Vancouver demonstrate the range of possibilities for public involvement and show the commitment and resourcefulness of local residents and artists.

Neighbourhood Greenways and City Greenways make up two major components of the Vancouver Greenways Plan, which was adopted by Council in 1995 and calls for the development of a citywide network of linear public corridors. Greenways expand opportunities for urban recreation, provide alternate ways to move through the city and enhance nature, community and city life experience.
