Center Strip Lane

Welcome to the City of Vancouver, local improvement section. This section of the Streets Design Branch of Engineering Services facilitates the curbing and paving of streets, the improvement of lanes, the construction of sidewalks or other improvements.

Staff can assist individuals, area residents or business associations to achieve improvements to their local area or immediate communities.

Within this site we hope to be helpful and informative as well as provide insight to the local improvement process.

Deadline for Petitions

The next time City Council meets to approve various types of petitioned Local Improvement Projects is June 14, 2011.

In order for Petitions to be presented to Council for review, Petitions must be returned to the Local Improvement Office by March 1, 2011 for processing and funding.

Completion of city sidewalk network

Council recently adopted recommendations from the Sidewalk Task Force. Changes in By-Laws and Policy are being implemented to better reflect council priorities for pedestrians. This has resulted in steps being taken to amend the by-law.

Environmental Options

There has been a strong demand for improvement options that address environmental concerns. A preference for alternatives resulted in the city seeking methods to allow surface water to permeate into the ground instead of being directed into the storm sewer system. Environmental options that have been adopted for lanes include center-strip pavement and "country lane" treatment.

Alternative methods continue to be considered as concepts or new information become available.
