Do your part to clear snow and ice off sidewalks

Snow AngelHelp others - Become a Snow Angel

Help your community and your neighbourhood. Lend a hand to keep our sidewalks clear of snow and ice.

For some seniors and persons with disabilities, moving snow can be difficult and even dangerous. You and your community group can help:

  • When it snows, lend a hand to people in your neighbourhood who could use help shovelling their sidewalks.
  • Adopt the sidewalk of a senior or a person with a mobility issue and keep it clear of snow and ice all winter long.
  • Be a point of contact in your community when the snow falls. Get on the City’s 3-1-1 Snow Angels list. Call 3-1-1.

Do your part clearing show & iceHelpful hints and safety tips

  • Please clear sidewalks adjacent to your property as soon as the storm is over.
  • Choose a snow shovel that is right for you. Push the snow instead of lifting.
  • Speak to your doctor if you have a heart condition or you're unsure if you're physically able to shovel snow. If you experience pain, stop immediately and seek help.
  • Warm-up and stretch before shoveling.
  • If the storm is over, the City has plowed, and snow begins to melt, please clear the snow around the catch basin in the gutter fronting your property. This will help the melt water runoff into the storm sewer system, and reduce flooding problems.
  • Clear snow from fire hydrants in front of your home in case of an emergency.
  • Avoid shovelling snow onto sidewalks or the roadway as it can be hazardous to pedestrians and vehicles.
  • If your car is on a major street, move it (if possible) to a side street. This will help City staff in plowing major arterial streets more effectively.
  • Do not try to drive on a street if it is blocked off with barricades. Please leave the barricades in place.
  • If possible, avoid driving until conditions have improved; transit routes are among the priority routes to be plowed.
  • If you must drive, leave earlier and allow more travel time, especially at rush hour.
