GRANVILLE ST - Beach to Cordova

GRANVILLE MALL     (Under construction)
Description and Concept:

The Enhanced Existing option proposes the fewest changes to the existing operation of the street. North of Smithe Street, the existing curved bus mall is proposed to be straightened to provide a consistent sidewalk width of 8.5 metres for pedestrians. South of Nelson Street, traffic patterns would remain unchanged. Sidewalks would be widened by the width of the existing parking lane to provide a sidewalk that can be used to accommodate parked vehicles between street trees.

Buses and authorized vehicles would continue to use the dedicated lanes north of Smithe Street. Greater transit priority and reduced conflicts will result by removing northbound general purpose traffic starting at Nelson, one block further south than at present.

A one-block civic event space is proposed between Robson and Georgia Street. The plaza, characterized by both permanent and temporary installations, is envisaged as the centre of commercial street life in the downtown. Access to the two Granville Street rapid transit stations between Robson and Dunsmuir Streets will also be facilitated by the wider sidewalks of the civic plaza.

UPDATES

1)
As of March 18th the 600 blk Granville will be closed to traffic from Georgia to Dunsmuir for approximately eight weeks. Below are all streets closed by Jacob Bros. Construction for Granville Re-Design.

1) Closures along Granville :

Robson to Georgia - 700 block
Georgia to Dunsmuir- 600 block
Dunsmuir to Pender - 500 block
Pender to Hastings - 400 block
Hastings to Cordova - 300 block

2) Beginning on Friday Oct 16th, parking restrictions will begin on 1200 & 1100 blk Granville with intermittent closures required for various electrical work. The shipment of materials will also require intermittent closures at Drake and Granville going north to Cordova. The critical areas will be the ten intersections on Granville, Drake to Cordova with Davie, Robson, Georgia, Pender, and Hastings.

Science World and 1st Ave.

ONTARIO/SEASIDE BIKE ROUTE DETOUR     (Approved)
For those who haven't walked or cycled on Ontario Street north of 1st Avenue since Monday October 5th, the connection between 1st Avenue and the Seaside Bike route (at Science World) is now detoured. The Seawall and Seaside bike route remain open between Cambie Bridge and Science World. The temporary closure and detour of these routes, Ontario and the Seaside bikeways, was recently presented to the Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) by staff from Olympic Operations and VANOC.

In the coming days you will see the existing streetcar track transformed into a separated bike path with asphalt surface. This will provide a comfortable separated facility for both northbound and southbound cyclists. Pedestrians can choose to utilize the existing sidewalk along the west or east side of Quebec (the east sidewalk can be accessed by using the existing signalized intersections at Terminal and at First Avenue).

At the 1st Avenue connection the existing southbound right-turn lane is being converted to a separated bi-directional facility (from 1st Avenue north to the existing streetcar tracks).

1st Avenue between Quebec and Ontario will have limited access for motorists and asphalt will be installed soon to provide an improved cycling connection.

Look for directional and wayfinding signage and please be aware that crews will be working to finalize the above noted work.

BOUNDARY ROAD - LOUGHEED HWY

HIGHWAY 1 OVERPASS REINFORCEMENT AND REPLACEMENT     (Under construction)
As part of the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement (PMH1) Project, many overpasses along the Highway 1 corridor need to be upgraded or replaced to accommodate for:
• the future widening of the highway
• improved durability for earthquake protection
• additional clearance for today’s taller commercial vehicles.

Work will begin on the series of overpasses between Vancouver and Burnaby in August 2009, and is scheduled for completion in late 2012.

Widening of 1st Avenue and Broadway Overpasses
In Vancouver, work will begin to upgrade and partly rebuild Highway 1 overpasses at 1st Avenue and Broadway/Lougheed Highway. Each overpass will be widened from two lanes to three. This work is also an important part of improving safety and accessibility at the 1st Avenue Interchange, including lengthened on and off-ramps. Work on the overpasses will be done from the cross streets below and will take place in three stages to ensure that both overpasses will remain open to vehicles throughout construction.

CURRENT UPDATES -
1)
Traffic Pattern Changes at 1st Avenue and Broadway
As part of the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement (PMH1) Project, work is currently underway to widen Highway 1 overpasses at 1st Avenue and Broadway/Lougheed Highway from two lanes in each direction to three lanes. As part of this construction, a traffic pattern change will come into effect in the week of September 28, 2009, for three months.

What to Expect
On 1st Avenue, the left-hand turn lane to the Highway 1 eastbound on-ramp (under Highway 1) will be shifted slightly north, and the westbound through lanes will be reduced from three lanes to two. Directly beneath the Highway 1 overpass on Broadway/Lougheed Highway, westbound lanes will be narrowed slightly to create extra room in the centre median. On the eastbound side, the bus-only turning lane will be shortened, but will remain in use for buses only. Concrete barriers will be installed around these areas to create a safe work space in the centre median for construction crews to build new bridge piers for the highway overpasses above.

Safety
As crews continue to work along one of the busiest corridors in Canada, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are requested to obey construction signage and speed limits, and to watch for flag persons. Please use caution, particularly at night. Please note that traffic fines double in construction zones. A key goal of the PMH1 project is to maximize predictability during construction and minimize disruption for commuters, goods movers, residents and the public. Construction updates will be issued regularly as the project progresses.

2)
During the week of October 4, 2009, a lane shift will come into effect as part of the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement (PMH1) Project. Along Highway 1, between Grandview Highway and Willingdon Avenue, lanes will be shifted to create more space for crews to work in the centre median area to build bridge piers. This traffic pattern change will be

CAMBIE RESTORATION     (Under construction)
OVERVIEW:
As Canada Line construction finishes on sections of Cambie, City of Vancouver crews begin the process of restoring and improving Cambie. Some of the work, such as sewer, water, and road repaving, will return Cambie to it's pre-Canada Line state.

Other work will improve street geometry and include corner bulges at key intersections and bike lanes for portions of the street. Other improvements include better sidewalks and landscaping, new pedestrian lighting, street furniture, and public art.
