Transforming Vancouver into a transit city

Growth in Vancouver's transit ridership is outpacing all other major Canadian transit systems. Transit trips have gone up 20 per cent in the last decade. A network of transit services has been planned between the Downtown, neighbourhood centers and regional destinations to encourage even greater transit use. Major projects on the horizon include the Canada Line, the Millennium Line extension, the Downtown Streetcar and increased rapid bus service. Visit Translink for more information. To enhance livability in the city of Vancouver, the City focuses on efficient public and private transportation.

The City, in partnership with TransLink, manages and upgrades transit operation within the City. Ongoing programs include:

  • bus priority measures which include bus lanes, bus bulges, special roadway surfaces and transit signals
  • location of bus stops to upgrade on-street bus operation and transit customer service
  • Installation of concrete passenger areas and concrete areas for accessible transit service operations
  • implementation of new transit routes
  • coordination of on-street construction to facilitate transit operation

Rapid transit office

The Rapid Transit Office facilitates development of rapid transit projects within Vancouver. City staff work with the agencies designing and building these projects to help address concerns of Vancouver residents and businesses. Major projects include the Canada Line and UBC Line.
