General Info A streetcar is an electrically powered, conductor operated rail car which can either travel on street or on an exclusive right of way. A streetcar system is proposed for Downtown Vancouver to improve the movement of people, as well as to enhance the "downtown experience" for residents, workers and visitors alike. In addition to being a transit link between major destinations, the streetcar would create interest and excitement, which could enhance both tourist activities, and daily routines. Phase One is well underway with the City's recent purchase of the Canadian Pacific False Creek railway corridor and the lease of two beautifully restored Interurban Cars, 1207 & 1231. The next phase of the dream is to extend the line into the downtown along the edge of Chinatown, to Waterfront Station at Coal Harbour. City Council has approved this route in principal, and the City is pursuing the funding and land required. [top] |
