Vancouver's Rapid Transit Principles for the Broadway Corridor
On April 22nd, 2010, City Council unanimously approved rapid transit principles for the Broadway Corridor and UBC Line Rapid Transit Study.
Intent of Principles
The principles are intended to guide City staff involvement in the planning and implementation of a rapid transit line that serves the Broadway Corridor from Commercial Drive to UBC, i.e. TransLink's UBC Line Rapid Transit Study.
Basis for Principles
The principles reflect the City's interests while also recognizing regional rapid transit and land use planning initiatives. They are based on:
- Lessons learned from the Canada Line;
- Comments heard from participants—including business, resident, and community groups along the Broadway Corridor as well as city-wide interest groups—in the Phase 1 consultation for the TransLink-led UBC Line Rapid Transit Study;
- Public feedback received between late January and early April 2010;
- Council priorities and initiatives related to sustainability, climate change, transportation, and land use, including those identified in the Greenest City Initiative; and
- Previously approved rapid transit principles and criteria that were developed for the Millennium Line and Canada Line.
Principles
The principles fall into six themes listed below. Each principle contains key considerations specific to the Broadway Corridor that are detailed in the Council report.
The principles are broad and as the work progresses, the final recommendation for a preferred option will most likely need to reflect some choices and trade-offs.
