  The Fraser River shoreline stretches 16 kilometres along Vancouver's southern border.

  It is a diverse area with:

Upcoming work on piers and boardwalks

  Fraser River Park upgrades

  Construction work on the pier and walkways 

  We’re upgrading the pier and walkways in Fraser River Park. Work includes repairing timber structures to help extend their lifespan.

  Restoring marine protection

  As part of the project, we’ll reinstate the floating surge boom to protect marine infrastructure from river debris.

  Damaged boardwalk removal

  The boardwalk west of the pier collapsed in December 2022 and is beyond repair. It will be removed during construction.

  Timeline and permitting

  Work can only begin once provincial permits are approved. Construction can only take place during a low-risk fisheries window. We’ll share updates and timelines on this page and through on-site signage.

  Access during construction

  To protect public and worker safety, access to beaches and walkways will be limited during construction.

  Gladstone Pier repairs

  Repairs to Gladstone Pier starting mid-January 2026

  Work to repair and replace damaged sections of the T-shaped pier is expected to begin in mid-January 2026, pending provincial permit approvals.

  Inspection findings

  A 2024 inspection identified signs of aging, weathering, and decay throughout the structure.

  Access during construction

  Access to the pier and ramp will be restricted during construction to support public and worker safety. More detailed timelines and updates will be shared once permits have been issued.

  Kerr Street pier and boardwalk reconstruction

  Kerr Street features 2 piers (east and west) that extend perpendicular to the shoreline, connected by a boardwalk. A protective timber log boom surrounds the pier and helps shield the adjacent wetland area.

  Inspection findings

  A 2024 inspection identified significant damage and deterioration throughout the structure, which must be addressed to keep the facility safe for public use.

  Planned construction work

  We’ll carry out repairs and replacements to weathered components of the piers and boardwalk. The timber log boom will also be fully replaced. This work is targeted for completion in spring 2026, pending provincial permit approvals.

  Access to the pier, boardwalk, and beach will be restricted during construction to support public and worker safety. We’ll share detailed timelines and updates once permits have been issued.
