What's happeningTrout Lake baseline water quality study
As a part of the John Hendry Park Renewal Plan, an assessment of water quality is underway until the end of 2027 to determine options to improve water quality, biodiversity, and to enhance park use services.
Trout Lake, which once supported a rich diversity of wildlife and offered a range of recreational opportunities, has faced repeated swimming closures from elevated seasonal microbial counts. Each year the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation has been adding potable water in an effort to maintain water levels and to make the lake swimmable. However, this approach has proven to be unsustainable and ineffective.
To restore the lake to a healthy state, it is important to understand its patterns and the sources of contamination before any future management can be performed. To support the ongoing water quality study, the addition of fresh water into the lake by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation has been discontinued, which may result in lowering the lake's level in dry months.
