June 26, 2020: Due to COVID-19, the 2020 City of Vancouver Book Award has been cancelled. More information on the 2021 Book Award submission process and announcement event will be posted as it becomes available next year.

Books on a shelfEligibility

The book may be:

  • Any genre (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or drama)
  • Written for adults or children
  • An exploration any aspect of the city, such as its history, geography, current affairs, diverse communities, or the arts
  • Written or published anywhere in the world

The book must not be:

  • Copyrighted prior to the previous year
  • A re-issue of a prior edition
  • A textbook

Evaluation criteria

The book must:

  • Contribute significantly to an appreciation and understanding of Vancouver and heighten awareness of one of the following: Vancouver's history, unique character, rich diversity and culture, or the achievements of its residents
  • Exhibit excellence in one of more of the following: content, illustration, design, format

If no book deemed worthy of this award is submitted, the prize will not be awarded that year.

How to submit a book for the award

  1. Download the entry form (New guidelines and a current entry form may be uploaded after May 30, 2020)
  2. Mail or deliver in person the following items for each book submitted:
    • A completed entry form
    • Four copies of the book
    • $20 entry fee (payable by cheque to the City of Vancouver)

  3. If selected as a finalist, provide five additional copies of the book.
