What you need to know

If you had a summer patio permit in 2023 and are not proposing any changes, you may renew the permit for summer 2024. You will receive a renewal notice by email on March 1, 2024.

For new patio applications OR if you would like to make changes to a previously permitted patio, you may apply for a:

  • Summer (simplified application): Permit valid April 1 - October 31
  • Summer (regular application): Permit valid April 1 - October 31
  • Year-round: Permit valid April 1 – March 31

Large sidewalk patios:

  • May be allowed for restaurants, cafés, distilleries, and breweries who want to apply to have outdoor seating on City sidewalks
  • Are located directly against the business storefront, either in front or on the side, where there is suitable sidewalk space and must not obstruct any entrances or exits
  • Are allowed within the patio for various table and chair configurations, but the patio must maintain an accessible aisle width and be accessible to persons of all abilities and mobility

If you have a valid BC liquor licence and LCRB approval, you can serve alcohol to patio patrons. Review how to apply to the LCRB or change your liquor service area to include your patio

Permit requirements

If you are proposing a patio on both sides of the property line (City and private), you may also be required to have a building and/or development permit. Review the requirements for a patio on private property
