2020 Youth Outreach Academy (YOA)

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) update

April 16, 2020: We have suspended, until further notice, our Youth Outreach Academy. We thank you for your continued patience and support during this difficult time.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) Youth Outreach Academy is a 5-day program that gives students the opportunity to experience the career training and work practice of a Vancouver Firefighter.

Through training like a firefighter recruit at Youth Outreach Academy, students will develop personal values and life skills such as teamwork, communication, professionalism, personal accountability, and service to community.

Examples of what this 5-day program may consist of are:

  • Firefighting operations
  • Search and rescue techniques
  • The use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • CPR certification
  • Portable extinguisher training
  • Volunteerism
  • Auto extrication

VFRS Youth Outreach Academy fosters personal growth and empowers students to overcome challenges in all facets of their lives.

Eligibility

The Youth Outreach Academy is free of charge and is open to any student in grade 11 or 12 who lives or goes to school in the City of Vancouver.

Public, private, alternative, and home school students are welcome. Students must be committed to attend and complete all 5 days.

We'll be accepting 20 participants for this amazing opportunity. Once students have successfully graduated the YOA, they enter the Youth Outreach Academy Alumni. All alumni are kept up to date with volunteer opportunities, social gatherings, and other ways to remain engaged with VFRS through the events we host and organize.
