What you need to know

Our Community Placemaking Program offers funding and permitting support for you to deliver a placemaking project that helps strengthen community bonds and bring Vancouver’s public spaces to life.

Funding up to $3,000 to support projects
There are 2 placemaking program options in 2026. Each applicant may choose to take part in 1 or both program options, but may submit only 1 application form.
IBPOC, 2SLGBTQ+, and other underrepresented residents, communities, and organizations are encouraged to apply and may be eligible for additional funding.

Parks, beaches, and community gardens are not eligible locations under this program.

Goals of placemaking
Placemaking is when the community works together to design and use public spaces in ways that add meaning, identity, and value for everyone.

Placemaking is meant to:
- Inspire people to work together to reimagine and reinvent public spaces
- Help make physical improvements to public spaces
- Encourage activities that strengthen community ties and connections to places
What you’ll receive
You will receive up to a $3,000 fee-for-service for your projects if your project is approved.

We use a fee‑for‑service model because:
- Placemaking is skilled work
- Projects are led by the community
- Funding is tied to completed work
This funding support is a reimbursement for project completion and will not be paid in advance for the delivery of the project.
What makes a successful proposal
Successful proposals will be:
- Free, accessible, inclusive, safe, and welcoming to all
- Unique, fun, and engaging
- Temporary and easy to set up and move
- Deliverable within the eligible budget and timeframe
- Aligned with our policies related to equity, reconciliation, sustainability, and resiliency
Your responsibilities
Applicants will be responsible for all aspects of their project, including:
- Setting up, taking down, and cleaning up after the project
- Getting relevant permits
- Acquiring, moving, and storing equipment
- Securing insurance (if needed)
