Marpole area traffic calming

We are addressing traffic issues on local streets in the Marpole area. We will do this by implementing one-way streets and turn restrictions to discourage vehicle shortcutting to access the Oak Street Bridge.

The measures will use durable interim materials, like concrete blocks, and provide a longer-term solution to the area's traffic management challenges. This fall, once the measures are in place and traffic has normalized, we will be collecting community feedback as well as traffic data.

What's happeningTraffic calming installation begins September 2025

Traffic calming measures on Shaughnessy St, Selkirk St, Fremlin St, Osler St, and W 71st Ave, were installed in September 2025.

In order to coordinate our efforts with upcoming development in Marpole, we anticipate installing W 64th Ave and W 67th Ave in the coming months.

Fremlin St update

Based on community feedback from those living south of West 70th Ave and east of Oak St, we have decided not to install the one-way on Fremlin St between W 70th Ave and W 71st Ave.

Given the limited access to this area and the signal at Fremlin St and 70th Ave, installing this measure would limit options for residents leaving the neighbourhood.

W 67th Ave

We have heard some residents share they use W 67th Ave as a vehicle route to cross Oak St and access shopping on Granville St. W 67th Ave is a designated bikeway that was identified in the Marpole Plan and the Cambie Corridor Plan as a neighbourhood walking and cycling corridor.

On bikeways/greenways, reducing vehicle volumes and the number of interactions between vehicles and people cycling as an important part of improving safety and comfort. Lower vehicle volumes also improve comfort and safety for people walking, especially at intersections.

Given that the traffic calming measures on W 67th Ave would support overall City goals, we plan to continue with the installation.
Heather St

We are also considering measures on the Heather Street Bikeway. Heather Street currently has high vehicle volumes for a bikeway. It also has the most upgrade requests of any bikeway over the past year.

The final locations will be confirmed by fall 2025 based on vehicle volume data and community feedback.

Next steps: Update

We have heard from many residents in response to the May 2025 notification letter. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback about the implementation of the one-way measures.

Traffic calming measures on Shaughnessy St, Selkirk St, Fremlin St, Osler St, and W 71st Ave, were installed in September 2025. The measures on 64th Ave and 67th Ave will be installed in the coming months.

Once all the measures are in place and traffic has normalized, we will be collecting community feedback as well as traffic data. This information will be used to determine if the measures should be changed, removed, or if additional measures should be added to meet the goal to reducing shortcutting vehicles on these streets.
