Looking out at Lost Lagoon

Lost Lagoon

Located at the Coal Harbour entrance to Stanley Park, the 17-hectare Lost Lagoon has been shaped by nature and humankind for generations.

Tides would roll in and out from the mud flats but this natural flushing process was blocked by the completion of the Stanley Park Causeway in 1926, leading to today’s poor water quality and algae blooms.

What's happeningWhat we’re doing to support Lost Lagoon

On March 10, 2026, the Park Board unanimously approved taking the next step in restoring Lost Lagoon by reconnecting it to Coal Harbour and Second Beach, re-establishing natural tidal flow.

The proposed reconnection would bring back daily tidal flushing through a new channel and culverts, improving water quality and supporting more natural, dynamic shorelines.

With the concept now endorsed, Park Board staff will advance design discussions and begin engaging potential funding partners, including:

  • Regulatory agencies
  • Local Indigenous groups
  • Interest-holders, like park users
  • The local community

The project is not yet funded. We'll share updates as planning progresses.
