Building a fence or wall

Arbors, archways, boundary fences, gates, pergolas, screens, trellises, walls, and similar structures are all examples of fences.

We are unable to indicate where the legal boundary between two properties are and cannot be a party to any disputes between neighbours about fences.  This is a civil matter and may require the resolution of small claims court.

Fences that don't require a permit

A fence may be erected along the property lines of a single detached home or duplex dwelling without a permit if the fence is:

  • Four feet or less (along the perimeter of the front yard)
  • Six feet or less (along the side and rear of the yard)
